Abstract

Studies on the interweaving of custom and Islam among the Gayo people have largely stopped at cataloguing values embedded in rites, arts, and customary institutions, leaving the mechanism of that interweaving at the level of everyday family talk unexamined. This study explains how the philosophy of Beru Berama and Bujang Berine is operated as a parenting framework and through which mechanism Islamic educational values are attached to that framework within the household. This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Sangir Village, Dabun Gelang District, Gayo Lues Regency, from August to October 2025. Data were gathered through observation, structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews with five purposively selected informants, and documentation of village and customary records; analysis followed data reduction, display, and verification, with source and method triangulation. Three findings emerged. First, Beru Berama and Bujang Berine function as gendered role scripts that translate abstract values into daily tasks that can be observed and appraised. Second, custom and sharia are joined through dual language, namely parental utterances that attach a scriptural reason to a customary title within a single sentence of advice, so that customary compliance and religious obedience are not experienced as separate obligations. Third, when caregiving time is eroded by the demands of coffee farming, families redistribute part of the educational burden to the meunasah, rotating Qur’anic sessions, and communal work. These findings move the claim of custom-Islam integration from the normative to the micro-pedagogical level and provide a basis for religious extension workers, teachers, and local government in designing family education grounded in local wisdom
