Abstract

Radicalism poses a serious threat that can erode the values of unity and tolerance in national life. Educational institutions, including schools, are not immune to the potential infiltration of this ideology. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in countering radical ideologies among students at secular-oriented Private Islamic Schools (MIS) Sekuelen. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with PAI teachers, and document analysis. The findings reveal that PAI teachers play a strategic role through several approaches: (1) Preventive, by integrating the values of religious moderation (wasathiyah), tolerance (tasamuh), and peace into the learning materials; (2) Curative, by providing individual guidance and counseling to students who show signs of intolerant thinking; and (3) Collaborative, by building partnerships with parents and educational staff to create an inclusive and peaceful school environment. The challenges faced include the strong influence of digital media and the social environment outside of school. The study concludes that despite operating in a secular school environment, PAI teachers have a central and effective role as the front line in shielding students from radical ideologies through exemplary behavior, a humanistic approach, and the contextualization of Islamic values as rahmatan lil 'alamin (a mercy to all worlds).
